Zero Blocker Defensive systems
0 - 2 - 4 System

Zero blocker defensive alignments assume that a team chooses not to have blockers at the net. Normally, one or two players are positioned around a blocker or blockers to cover tips, partial blocks and "garbage" shots that fall in the portion of the attacking zone closest to the net. These players cover the same area in the zero blocker alignment. The players in the back court cover any hard hitting attacks and down balls. The setter is in a position to cover tips but would normally allow the other tip coverage player to play any attacks in this area. The setter should be in position to run the transition to offense. One modification to zero blocker defensive systems moves the center back player to a 'man up' position to cover the center of the court. When the opposing team uses more off speed attacks or does not have strong attackers that would require three passers deep, the 'man up' defense might be a more effective option.
