Obituaries

Although obituaries are written and published at very sad times in the lives of families, from an historical perspective they may represent a fantastic source of genealogical information. Usually listed are names and towns of residences, of parents, siblings and children, whether they are living and perhaps names and residences of relative who traveled distances to attend the funeral. Listed below are some of those obituaries and death notices.

Rev. Francis X. Boeding

(1853 - 1928)

Dubuque, Iowa

October 10, 1928

Father Francis Xavier Boeding, pastor of St. Luke's Church, St. Lucas, Iowa passed away Tuesday evening at 6 o'clock. He had been ill for many weeks.

He was born in Westphalia, Germany, September 4, 1853. He studied his classics at Paderborn, Germany, philosophy at Muenster and theology at Muenster and Montreal. He was ordained at Montreal, December 2, 1877, by Bishop Faber. His first assignment was at Guttenberg where he served from 1878 to 1882. Then he was appointed to the pastorate of St. Lucas, where he has since served.

The young priest came to St. Lucas at a time when this great wheat field community, was sadly devastated by the chinch bug. The farmers were discouraged and times were bad. The parish of St. Lucas numbered some seventy-five families, closely settled within an area of about five square miles. In order to build up the parish, the first thing was to increase the number of Catholic families. The second was to reawaken the confidence of the parishioners in farming. This he did by making a study of the land and by urging the people to plant corn and to specialize in blooded stock.

Whenever there was a farm for sale in the vicinity of his parish, Father Boeding bought it. He had no money, but he secured the farm by means of an option. Then he went in search of a Catholic family. When he found one, he turned over the farm. That the new parishioner had no money never bothered the zealous young pastor. He would find out where the newcomer could secure a loan at a moderate rate of interest. Another new farmer was added to St. Lucas parish.

And so it was through the years. Father Boeding never tired of working for his beloved parishioners. The parish rapidly grew, its families doubled, its territory greatly increased. Today St. Lucas is a fine rural parish - built up by a zealous rural pastor. Father Boeding has been a spiritual father and at the same time the inspiration and helping hand to its growth and prosperity.

The funeral will be held on Friday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Luke's Church, St. Lucas, Iowa.

Father Boeding's death occasioned grief not only among his parishioners, but all through the territory surrounding St. Lucas where he had many dear friends.

Scoutmaster Bob Roberts and members of Troop 145, of which Raymond and Kenneth Boeding are members, the Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph's society formed the escort of honor. Three nephews, Fredolin, Edgar and Paul Boeding and Donald Koehler were servers.

Many people in the Seneca community were saddened as the news of Mr. Boeding's death spread last Thursday. Frank had many friends. He was a quiet sort of man, tended strictly to his own business, yet enjoyed fellowship and looked upon life with a good-natured attitude. Though his death was untimely, he had achieved considerable of worthwhile things. There are no riches which would compare with the good wife, the five boys and two girls of the Boeding family circle. Frank Boeding placed his home as one of the high things in life. One could not drive past the well-kept premises in northeast Seneca without realizing it.

He found expression of his faith in the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and was also a member of the St. Joseph's society and Council No. 1769, Knights of Columbus.

Frank was born August 30, 1891 at St. Lucas, Iowa, his death Sept. 8, 1937 making his age 46 years and nine days.

The Boeding family came to the farm east of Seneca in 1908, when Frank was about 17.

On October 10, 1916, he married Miss Anna Herbers at New Vienna, Iowa. Their children are Ambrose, Alma, Gregory, Raymond, Kenneth, Mary Ann and Regis. The present place in Seneca has been the home for 12 years. Mr. Boeding has been a produce dealer the past 10 years.

A brother, Herman, died last December 4. The mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Boeding and the following brothers and sisters survive in addition to his wife and children: Conrad of Corning, August, Edward and Cyril of Seneca; Rev. A.A. Boeding, Groom, Texas; Sister M. Cyril of LeMars, Iowa; Sister M. Helen of Alton, Iowa: Sister M. Edward of Denver and Miss Theresa of Seneca.
