Cardinals close out the season

with a victory

The Cardinals ended their season with a victory over the Twisters, 2 - 0 in Garland Soccer Association 8 and under girls league play on Saturday, November 8. The team won its last four games, all by shutout, to finish the season with a six win and four loss record.

In the last game, the Cardinals went to the sidelines at half time with a scoreless tie. The goalie for the Twisters, Amanda King, stopped every shot on goal by the Cardinals. The Cardinals' goalies in the first half were very lonely since the team kept the ball in the opponents half of the field for most of the half.

The third quarter produced all the scoring the Cardinals would need to secure a victory. Lauren Farris scored the first goal on a short kick in the middle while the Cardinals were working the ball around the goalie box. Lauren scored again after she and Danielle Millard worked the ball down the field on a breakaway. Lauren was playing her best game of the season, often beating several opponents while working the ball downfield and sometimes outdistancing her teammates to the goal.

The game ended with the score 2 - 0 after a scoreless fourth quarter. Gloria Scammel and Brandi Blassingille provided some excitement in the last stanza with some good passing and some near misses around the goal.

The coaching staff wishes to thank all of the parents and relatives of the players for their support throughout the season and to congratulate the players on an excellent season. We are all looking forward to the start of the spring season and hope to see all of our players returning.

Cardinals let the air out of the

Twisters, 2-0

The Cardinals have fought their way back into a winning record by defeating the Twisters 2 to 0 in Garland Soccer Association 8 and under girls league play on Saturday, November 1. The Cardinals were unable to get anywhere close to a goal due to excellent goalie play by the Twisters early in the game. Midway through the second quarter, Gloria Scammel placed a penalty kick right in front of Danielle Millard who punched it in for the Cardinal's first goal. In the same quarter, Anna Salzman finally put one in after several attempts that were just wide to account for the final goal.

The Cardinal defense knotted their third shutout of the season. Jenny Bubel at goalie and Lauren Farris at fullback turned away the Twisters several times in the third quarter. Missy Vergenz, Alexandra DeSoto and Chelsea Collazo kept the ball moving on offense but again excellent goalie play kept them from scoring.

The Cardinals close out their season against the Twisters on Saturday, November 8, 3:00 p.m. at Winters #3 in Garland. The team has a chance to improve on last year's record of four wins, three losses and three ties with a victory. The Cardinals currently stand at five wins, four losses.

The Cardinals were red hot on Saturday, October 25, when they dispatched the Honeybears by a score of 4 to 0 in the Garland Soccer Association 8 and under girls league play. It was late in the first quarter before Alexandra DeSoto scored the first goal for the Cardinals. The Cardinals kept the ball on the Honeybears' side of the field most of the first half with numerous shots on goal that did not connect. In the second quarter, Danielle Millard put the Cardinals ahead by two with a hard shot from beyond the goalie box. Gloria Scammel stopped two breakaway scoring opportunities by the Honeybears with some good defensive play at fullback.

The Cardinals displayed some excellent passing in the second half, controlling the ball for most of the final two quarters. Anne Marie Boeding scored the next goal as she and Lauren Farris advanced the ball down the field with well-timed passing and some skillful dribbling, Lauren receiving an assist for her effort. Later in the third quarter, Lauren scored the fourth Cardinals goal as the team again advanced the ball all the way down the field.

In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals had numerous scoring opportunities lead by Anna Salzman who had two shots that hit the goal posts. Brandi Blassingille had what appeared to be a goal but the ball rolled out before the call was made. Chelsea Collazo demonstrated excellent pursuit of the ball and made some well placed passes to afford her teammates several close shots on goal.

Cardinals chill the Red Hots, 2-1

The Cardinals came from behind to outlast the Red Hots by a score of 2 to 1 in Garland Soccer Association 8 and under girls league play on Saturday, September 20, avenging an earlier loss. The Red Hots jumped to an early lead in the first quarter with a goal by Abigail West. The Cardinals missed on several opportunities to even it up in the first half and went to the sidelines at half time down by one.

The Cardinals came out smoking in the second half with a quick goal by Danielle Millard, with an assist from Alexandra DeSoto. The visiting team kept the ball on the Red Hots' side of the field for most of the third quarter, aided by the crisp passing of Anna Salzman. Before the end of the quarter, Danielle Millard connected again to put the Cardinals in the lead for good.

In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals used a tenacious defense to keep the Red Hots from scoring. The ball was on the Cardinals' side of the field most of the quarter but Middle-Midfielder Rebecca Solares, Fullback Gloria Scammel and Goalie Chelsea Wymer kept the ball out of the goal.
